These pieces are all created by kiln firing glass through metal in a
refractory mold. The metal, along with heat, gravity, and timing, are what
determine the final shape of the glass. The purpose of the mold is to create a
flange on the edge of the glass, which conforms to the lip of the cast concrete
surround. Most glass is custom colored in three separate firings. After the
final firing, in which it is slumped around the copper, it is mirror-finished on
the back. The copper is cleaned, polished, nickel-plated and hand-lacquered.
Each concrete surround is a single solid casting, packed by hand in an acrylic
mold. Its color may be left with its natural finish, airbrushed, or internally
dyed with a custom acrylic mix. Surrounds are then lacquer finished. All sculptures are assembled with Baltic birch backs and
hand-made French cleats unless otherwise stated. They can be hung on any wall
surface. |
